What Is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry eye is considered a disease because it is chronic and progressive. If left untreated, the disease can worsen, and symptoms can become more disruptive to clear and comfortable vision.

What is

Gland Obstruction

We all have glands in our upper and lower eyelids that secrete a specialized oil called meibum into our tear film. Meibum pulls oxygen from the environment to nourish the cornea and prevent redness. It also helps stabilize our tear film so our vision remains clear and does not fluctuate. Meibum also contains antibacterial properties, which protect our eyes from infections.

This oil layer is secreted into our tear film every time we blink, but most of us don’t blink enough throughout the day, causing our oil glands to back up. And once the oils stop regularly flowing from these glands, they begin to atrophy (deteriorate).

In the comparative meibography scan, the first image shows an eyelid with healthy meibomian glands. In the second image, you can see an eyelid with moderate gland obstruction where some blocked glands are partially atrophied, and some have already disappeared.

Inflammation

Chronic inflammation damages the meibomian glands and destabilizes the tear film. The primary source of inflammation is leaky blood vessels along the eyelid margins. People with inflammatory conditions such as rosacea, arthritis, eczema, and many other autoimmune diseases may be more susceptible to dry eye disease.
